Flat paint for cars?

I guess it just shows that all fashion is cyclic, or as my mother used to say "Wait long enough and it will be in fashion."
My friend Mike works at D & C Auto Body told me that in California flat automotive paint is the new thing. It's a throw back to the 1940 and 50's when the hot rodders were leaving their rods in black primer. Now here's the problem it's the shiny skin on the paint that protects the metal. I've looked at this from a few different ways and I can't think of a good way to do it.
My advice go for gloss.

well for one, don't just use a primer as paint. a brand called Hot Rod Flatz makes actual paint with a flattening agent in it so it looks like primer. or you could just spray a flat clear for that protecting top coat.

I agree with Anonymous. I wrote this post in 2005, and since then there have been alternatives. The Hot Rod Flatz are made by Kustom Shop paints. SEM makes a Hot Rod Black kit that I have tried and worked out pretty well.
My friend Josh from True Kustom http://truekustom.com/ tells me that the Alsa http://www.alsacorp.com/ flat paints are far and away the best he has ever used.
